Nathan Rien
Head Coach (6th Year)
Head Coach Nathan Rien invites you to “Catch the excitement and thrills
of Claim Jumper Basketball!” Now in his sixth year, Rien has stated,
“This season’s lineup of local student-athletes will provide lots of
strength and versatility on the court.
However, we have scheduled a very tough pre-season, in order to
prepare us for the rigors of Central Valley Conference play.”
“Last season, our student-athletes were very
focused on academics.”
Sophomores Leo Sarrade (Cal. State Maritime) and Rajwayne Palmer
(Mayville State, North Dakota) signed letters of intent to play
basketball at four year schools, while Jon Hammell (Sacramento State),
Jess Donnerberg (Washington State), and Marcus Cendro (San Diego State)
are all pursuing their bachelors at four-year institutions as well.
Columbia’s Basketball Program boasted a 3.18 overall GPA through
the Spring of 2008- a very remarkable standard for any collegiate
athletic squad. “Those young
men continuously made me and our college very proud.
Prior to Columbia College, Rien was head coach at Oakdale High School
where he established the Mustang program as one of the best in the
Valley Oak League. The Oakdale teams reached the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section
Division III playoffs in three of his four seasons.
In addition, Rien served as an assistant basketball coach at California
State University, Stanislaus during 2002-03, where the Warriors improved
to an 18-11 record.
The team also set school records for most league wins and home wins in a
season.
Rien played basketball at UC Davis from 1995-97 when the Aggies won two
conference titles and also spent the 1997-98 season as a red-shirt on
the university’s baseball team.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from UC
Davis and a master’s degree in education from National University. In
the summer of 2004, Rien was named Masters Student of the Year, after
completing his Masters in Sports Science at the United States Sports
Academy in Daphne, Alabama.
Rien, 31, lives in Oakdale with his fiancé Shelley
and step-son Noah, and is only the seventh coach in Columbia’s history.
