2007-08 season calendar for Jazz Series and Jazz Festivals

The Columbia College Jazz Series kicks off its 29th season on Monday, Sept. 24 with the Rachel Z trio. The New York artists return again this fall after a highly successful tour and concert in the area last spring.

Rachel "Z" on piano will be joined by Maeve Royce on bass and Bobbie Rae on drums. In a number of selections, the Columbia College Big Band will back the trio, who will also perform several pieces from their newest CD release.

Tickets are $10 for reserved seating at the 7:30 p.m. concert in the college’s Dogwood Theater. Purchases can be made at the Manzanita Bookstore, 588-5126 and the Mountain Bookshop in the Sonora Junction Shopping Center, 532-6117.

During the month of October, the jazz series will participate in several events including the Columbia College Foundation’s Lakeside Jazz and Wine on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The fourth annual foundation fundraiser will include fine wines, hors d’oeuvres, an art show and silent auction – as well as performances by the Columbia College Big Band Jazz Ensemble, Combo #5 and the Mario Flores Latin Jazz Band. In addition, there will be a 39-foot long cake in anticipation of the college’s 40th anniversary in 2008. For tickets, call 588-5115.

On November 3 and 4, the jazz series continues with "Double the Pleasure" with guest woodwind artists and jazz series favorites Paul Contos and Don Shelton. Shelton also sings and both will perform on sax, flute and clarinet.

On the weekend of December 8 and 9, the series will present "It's a Big Band Christmas" with pianist Bob Secor and several singers.

Welcoming in 2008 will be blues vocalist Barbara Morrison, joined by Tower of Power saxman, Skip Mesquite on January 19 and 20.

February 8 and 9 will feature brass recording artists Mic Gillette, and Marvin McFadden along with Contos and Secor for the annual Big Band Jazz Festival.

On March 7 and 8, the jazz series will present the 29th Annual Vocal Jazz Festival. The award winning jazz a cappella group "Clockwork" will be joined by singers Morrison and Shelton, along with pianist Phil Mattson.

The season finale in April will consist of the Mario Flores Sextet and the 25-piece college big band for a "Big Band meets Latin Jazz" performance.

Season tickets for the seven concert series are available for $75, which includes preferred seating for all events. That represents more than a 25% discount on individual performance tickets. For information on future concert times, locations and tickets, call the Columbia College Jazz Series office at 588-5211.
